After eight years with Ferrari, Massa is on the lookout for another team after the Brazilian was last week ousted in favour of returning 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
Lotus team principal Eric Boullier has already confirmed he has held talks with Massa about replacing Raikkonen, along with Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.
As Lotus are the only realistic option for Massa to achieve his aims of winning further races, and even a championship, it is likely all his eggs are being placed in that basket.
Speaking about his future ahead of Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix, the 32-year-old said: "We are talking with some teams, and I hope we find the best direction for me.
"I know I still have a lot to do, to give to a team and to the other drivers as a competitor on the track, so I want to find a good car.
"As I've said many times I'm not interested in being part of Formula One just to be on the grid, in the picture.
"I want to be there with good opportunities and fighting for the best results possible, for victory, for the championship and fight for the best for me.
"That's what I'm looking for, so I hope we can find this, and we are trying everything we can."
After beating Ferrari to the punch by tweeting about his departure last week, Massa later admitted in an interview with Globo television station in Brazil he would no longer help Fernando Alonso this season.
Massa has long been Alonso's stool pigeon, and he would rightfully be expected to play his part over the closing seven races in helping his team-mate close the 53-point gap to title leader Sebastian Vettel.
Pointedly asked about his comment to Globo, Massa simply joked his way through his answer, refusing to indicate either way what course of action he would take.
Massa said: "I never help. I don't help Fernando, Ferrari, I don't help anything. I just help myself!"
He added: "I will naturally try to do the best I can in these last seven races.
"I've had a fantastic career with Ferrari for a long time. It's part of my history - eight years as an official driver.
"I've a lot of friends inside the team, so I want to finish in the best way possible, with a victory. I will push very hard for that."
