Pramac Ducati rider Danilo Petrucci is likely to miss the MotoGP season opener in Qatar after injuring his right hand during the final day of testing at Phillip Island on Friday.
Petrucci fractured the second, third and fourth metacarpals in his hand after crashing at Turn 8 and will now undergo further scans in Melbourne on Saturday.
Petrucci has already been ruled out of the final pre-season test in Qatar from March 2 to 4, but he has also been listed as doubtful for the race, which takes place on March 20.
“The weather conditions did not help us working on set-up and Danilo’s accident is too big a price to pay,” team manager Francesco Guidotti told reporters. “It’s never the right time to fall and hurt but surely this is a particularly sensitive time.
“It is frustrating, we know. But we must look to the future with strength and determination. We have to focus on the Danilo’s recovery, the whole team is with him.
“We are confident that he will recover soon. The hope is that he will be on track for the GP in Qatar but now is too early to have a clear scenario.”
Petrucci finished 10th in the 2015 MotoGP season, with his best performance coming at the British Grand Prix, where he finished second.
