Prior to her historical achievement in 2014, Seavmey won the gold at the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar in the same weight division, after coming from 3-0 down in the final to take the victory from Fatemeh Rouhani of Iran.
She didn’t quite hit the same heights in 2015 as in the two years prior, losing in the last 32 of the World Championships and the quarter-finals of the Universiade competition. As a result, she opted against defending her Southeast Asia Games title in order to focus on Olympic qualification.
Her decision proved to be an inspired one, after Son won the 67kg title at the Asian Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament in the Philippines’ capital Manila in April 2016.
Subsequently, she is only athlete from her country to triumph in an official pre-Games qualifying competition.
Sorn will have the honour of being Cambodia’s flagbearer in Rio de Janeiro later this year.
