The current format of the S.League sees the 13 teams in the league play one another in home and away fixtures, with the final standings of the teams decided after all 24 rounds of games have been played but next season could see an additional component added to this set-up.

Following the conclusion of the initial 24 rounds of games, the S.League champions will then be decided in a mini-league competition between the top seven sides in the table, whilst a separate mini-league will also be created for the remaining six sides to compete for their final position.

Speaking to TODAY at a S.League club chairmen's meeting, chief executive Lim Chin revealed: "S-League 2013 is starting to take shape, the league format has been decided... and the fitness test is also more or less decided.

"We will be making formal announcements in two weeks when we get final approval for subsidies for clubs to sign marquee players next year.

"But there is some good news: The funding (request) is already being processed."

Lim refused to disclose further details of the marquee player scheme but did confirm that passing the dreaded Beep Test would no longer be a requirement for players to be able to play in the league.

In its place, players will have to pass a 2.4km run; the passing time for outfield S-League players has been set at 10 minutes 15 seconds, while the passing time for Prime League players is 10 minutes 45 seconds. Goalkeepers will have to complete the run within 12 minutes.

Interest in S.League games has seen a dramatic dip this season, due in no small part to the participation of the LIONSXII in the Malaysia Super League, and these proposed changes are aimed at increasing fan attendance to the games.

The last games of this season's S.League will take place on November 4 and the new season will begin in February next year.
