Macedonian midfielder Mario Djurovski scored the only goal in the 39th minute to hand his side all three points and, in the process, ensured they capitalised on second-placed BEC Tero Sasana's 1-1 draw with BBCU a day earlier.
The Twin Qilins dominated the opening exchanges at the Nongbru Stadium and should have taken the lead early on when Teerasil Dangda was denied by an excellent save from Narit Taweekul.
However, Muangthong's dominance eventually paid off six minutes before the break when Djurovski found the back of the net with a delicately-struck freekick, and although Pattaya created several chances in the second half, the visitors stood firm to hold on to all three points.
Chonburi moved up to fifth on the table after coming from behind to record a 2-1 win at Police United.
The hosts went ahead after just seven minutes through Surachart Sareepim but the Sharks hit back on the hour mark through Natthaphong Samana, before midfielder Adul Lahso fired home the winner right at the death.
Elsewhere, Samut Songkhram beat Osotspa Saraburi 1-0 courtesy of Napat Thumrongsupakorn's 35th-minute strike, while eight-man Wuachon United somehow managed to hold Chiangrai United to a 1-1 draw in an ill-tempered affair.
Aron da Silva had given Wuachon the lead in the 51st minute, only for it to be cancelled out by Antonio Claudio fourteen minutes from time.
Two minutes later, tempers started to boil over and Seydou Kone received his marching orders for a second yellow, before Wuachon were further reduced after Puritat Jarikanont and Da Silva were sent off in the final two minutes.
