McIlroy wins big at Tour Championship

Rory McIlroy shot a 6-under par 64 at the Tour Championship on Sunday before emerging victorious on the fourth playoff hole at East Lake to claim the title and also the FedEx Cup.

The Ulsterman has been struggling over recent months, but chose exactly the right time for a return to form, earning $11.5 million dollars in the process – $1.5 million for for the Tour Championship and a staggering $10 million for the FedEx Cup grand prize.

The victory came on the fourth hole of sudden death after McIlroy, Ryan Moore and Kevin Chappell had finished in a three-way tie at 12-under par.

McIlroy had missed the opportunity to win when he lipped out with a short eagle putt on the first playoff hole and again with a long birdie putt on the second.

He then had to hole a tricky seven-footer on the third hole before winning it on the fourth with a birdie.

The Northern Irishman’s victory meant disappointment for overnight leader and US Open Champion Dustin Johnson, who would have topped the FedEx Cup rankings with a victory of tie for second. Johnson endured a disappointing final round, shooting a three-over par 73 to finish tied for sixth-place at five-under par.
