The 27-year-old played under Deschamps for three seasons at OM before the coach left for the national team this summer, with the club winning the 2010 Ligue 1 title in their former midfielder's first season in charge and three successive Coupes de la Ligue.
And he told L'Equipe: "What he is trying to instil in us is his determination and his aggression. He asks us to believe until the final minute.
"At Marseille, it's true that it was not always great to watch but it allowed us to win matches that were mentally tough, to be champions of France and to win trophies."
The Belgian-born Valbuena will battle with Jeremy Menez for the right-wing spot, something of a problem position for Les Bleus in recent times.
Of less concern is the centre of defence, where Mamadou Sakho and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa look certain to continue a partnership which earned a second successive clean sheet in last Friday's opening qualifier against Finland, when France won 1-0 through Abou Diaby's goal.
Deschamps told fff.fr: "They also played together in the (goalless) friendly against Uruguay and they were physically ready on Friday, they confirmed that with their performance.
"Anything is possible but why change something that worked so well?"
Lille midfielder Rio Mavuba was another to advance his cause in Helsinki, with Deschamps noting: "Rio has the same leadership role he has at LOSC. He knows what he has to do.
"He is at the heart of the game, he communicates well and is respected in the squad.
"We'll see over time but what he does for his club, he can also do for the national team."
Mavuba and his colleagues in the middle of the park will face a much-weakened Belarusian midfield, with four first-choice players missing.
Already without Alexander Hleb for Friday's 1-0 defeat against Georgia, coach Georgi Kondratiev has also lost Pavel Nekhaitchik and Maksim Bordatchev to thigh problems while Yan Tigorev has damaged his tibia.
The perceived underdogs will, however, put a surprise unbeaten record against France on the line having taken four points off them in qualifying for Euro 2012.
