Heading into the game at the Bedok Stadium third from bottom with just eight points from their opening nine games, the Eagles were expected to be overpowered by Tanjong Pagar, who started the night second on the table.
It certainly looked as though a Jaguars win was on the cards after they took the lead in the third minute; Hafiz Nor's corner eluding a sea of bodies and making its way to Kamel Ramdani, who made no mistake with an emphatic finish from 12 yards out.
However, the Eagles showed plenty of fight after going behind and equalised four minutes before the half-hour mark when Norihiro Kawakami met Nurhazwan Norasikin's corner and flicked the ball towards the back post, where Jozef Kaplan proceeded to unleash a brilliant left-footed half-volley into the roof of the net.
And right before halftime, Geylang netted what ultimately proved to be the winner when Khairulnizam Jumahat sent a pinpoint freekick onto the head of Yasir Hanapi, who glanced a header home despite Aurelien Herisson's best efforts to keep it out.
The result also saw Tanjong Pagar overtaken in second place by Albirex Niigata (S) who saw off a determined Balestier Khalsa with a 1-0 victory at the Toa Payoh Stadium.
Despite the Tigers dominating proceedings, they could not find the back of the net as opposition keeper Hiroaki Hara and his woodwork came to the White Swans' rescue on several occasions.
Ten minutes from time, Shingo Suzuki received the ball from Bruno Castanheira and curled a neat left-footed strike into the bottom corner to steal the three points for Albirex and condem unlucky Balestier to a second straight defeat.
