Kaplan set the round the keeper...

Following a goalless first half, the Eagles opened the scoring in the 66th minute when captain Jozef Kaplan fired home from a tight angle, before substitute Khairulnizam Jumahat wrapped up the points a minute from time with a second.

Entering the game at the Bedok Stadium second from bottom with just three points from their opening five games, it was beginning to look like another defeat was on the cards for the hosts as Hougang started the brighter of the two sides.

Nonetheless, it was Geylang who had the first real chance early on when they cut apart their opponents with some excellent one-touch passing, creating enough space for Kaplan to fire away but Faizal Amir was on hand to clear off the line.

But the Cheetahs soon got into their groove and Mamadou Diallo sent an effort just wide in the 28th minute, before opposition goalkeeper Joey Sim raced off his line brilliantly to deny Robert Eziakor, who had looked set to score after racing through on goal five minutes later.

Eight minutes before the break, Hougang had another great chance to open the scoring when Eziakor saw a goal-bound effort booted off the line by Khayrulhayat Jumat, and Sim then came to the hosts' rescue in the 42nd minute with a fine save to deny Jerome Baker.

However, Geylang did come out after halftime looking like a different side, and after firing a few warning shots, they duly took the lead six minutes after the hour mark when a cross from Jalal found Kaplan, who fired home a ferocious shot from a tight angle.

The Slovak nearly doubled his tally in the 74th minute when he let fly with a 35-yard freekick but Fadhil Salim produced a fine save to keep out the effort, before Diallo threatened the Eagles goal once more three minutes after with a fierce long-range strike that just missed the target.

The Hougang striker then must have thought he had scored five minutes from time when he found space inside the area and looked destined to score, only to see Delwinder Singh stick out a late to block his effort.

And four minutes later, the three points were secured for Geylang when Khairulnizam, brought on for Taufiq Ghani moments earlier, fired home to cap off an excellent result for his side.
