S.League Player To Watch: Week 5

This week, ESPNSTAR.com picks out Harimau Muda midfielder Gary Robbat as our Great Eastern-YEO's S.League Player To Watch.

Football News: Gary Robbat, Harimau Muda

Harimau Muda have enjoyed an impressive life to top-flight football in Singapore, and are currently 6th in the table after recording wins in their opening two games against Gombak United and Tanjong Pagar United.

Already, S.League fans are starting to become familiar with several Young Tigers, including imposing centre-back Fadhli Shas, talented playmaker Nazmi Faiz and striker Thamil Arasu.

However, one player that has caught the eye more than the rest has been Robbat, who was extremely impressive in Harimau Muda's opening game against the Bulls.

In that match at the Jalan Besar Stadium, he bossed things in the middle of the park despite coming up against more-experienced players, and was immaculate in his passing, earning praise from coach Ong Kim Swee after the game.

And while the 19-year-old is more famous for his indomitable spirit in midfield, he showed good attacking instincts in Harimua Muda's second match against Tanjong Pagar.

With the Young Tigers 1-0 up, Robbat showed good poise and technique to double their advantage on the stroke of halftime with a neat finish, although there was a huge element of luck involved after Jaguars goalkeeper Shamsudin Hashim had inexplicably dropped an easy cross into his path.

Harimau Muda face their first real test at the Yishun Stadium on Sunday when they take on high-flying Albirex Niigata, who will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's 2-1 loss to DPMM FC, their first defeat of the season.

With Albirex midfielder Atsushi Shimono used to having things his way in midfield, all signs are already pointing to a gruelling one-on-one battle against Robbat in the middle of the park.
