Balotelli joined the Rossoneri back in January from Manchester City but has already been a hit despite his previous spell with their arch-rivals Inter Milan, netting seven goals in his first six games for the club.
Although the 22-year-old has often been criticised throughout his career due to his off-field antics and controversial behaviour, Abate believes he is just misunderstood.
"Balotelli's mentality seems right to me," he said. "I hope he stays at Milan for a long time.
"Milanello is a family, everyone helps each other."
Abate also had words of praise for 20-year-old full-back Mattia De Sciglio, who recently won his first Italy cap in last week's 2-2 friendly draw against Brazil.
"De Sciglio is a calm and balanced guy who has his head in the right place, which is quite rare for someone so young," he added.
Following the international break, Milan are back in action this weekend when they visit Chievo in Serie A.
