Prior to the game, the talented 23-year-old had yet to score in the league for the club. He scored a brace within the game to help ensure that Fiorentina closed within a point of the Nerazzurri.

His strike partner Adem Ljajic also scored two goals and Inter could only reply with Antonio Cassano's long-range strike late into the game.

The emphatic nature of the win delighted the home fans on the night and many have begun to believe in the possibility of securing Champions League qualification. As things stand, they are just two points shy of third-placed Lazio although the Romans are yet to play their Serie A fixture of the round at Siena later on Monday.

A jubiliant Jovetic stated after the game: "We have always believed in third place, as we continued to play well even when the results were not coming."

"Tonight's [Saturday's] game shows the important thing is consistency.

"We are very happy and I want to thank our fans who supported us throughout a difficult period.

"We really needed this result to shake us up. Now we must immediately focus on Bologna and getting a result there too, as we need to continue like this.

"Tonight I played as a centre-forward, which in general I don't like as much, but I did pretty well. I scored two goals and am very happy."

Fiorentina were rampant at the Stadio Artemio Franchi although the result was only their second win of the year. They finished in 13th position last year but have exceeded all expectations in the current campaign.
