Contract extension talks between Inter Milan and Sneijder broke down at the end of the last year, prompting rumours and an admission from the player himself that a January exit from the San Siro seemed likely.
However, Nerazzurri manager Andrea Stramaccioni recently insisted that he still had plenty of respect for the Dutch international as a player and hoped all parties involved could come to a resolution regarding the contract dispute. Echoing his manager's statements, Zanetti encouraged Sneijder to think carefully before making a decision on his future.
"The only one who can decide is him, and he must speak clearly and be honest. If he wants to stay, a solution can be found. I said to him: 'Choose from the heart'," he shared with La Gazetta dello Sport.
"If he comes back and says, 'I am looking ahead for the good of Inter' there will be no problem. But he must be the first not to carry grudges."
Another Inter player who has found himself at the centre of transfer speculation is Ricardo Alvarez. The former Velez Sarsfield player has started just two Serie A matches this season, but Zanetti gave his compatriot a vote of confidence to stay at the club.
"I don't think Ricky has disappointed, [although] he has struggled to find consistency, if he could play ten games in a row, today [Thursday] he could say different things. Unfortunately, he is often injured, but you cannot say he is soft: he always wants the ball and even though San Siro is not easy [to play at], he has never been afraid to continue to ask for the ball," he stated.
"I think at the end of January he will still be with us, and then a decision will be made at the end of the season."
Inter Milan travel to Udinese for their Serie A fixture this weekend.
