The coach saw his side register an impressive 3-0 win over Panathinaikos at the Stadio Olimpico. It also went some way towards readjusting their markers this season following a shock 4-0 loss to seventh-placed Catania last weekend.
But Petkovic knows that the fans will be even more happier if they get to witness a strong result against local rivals Roma on Sunday.
"From the first day I got here the talk has been about the derby, as everyone urged me to win it," Petkovic revealed in the press conference after Thursday's Europa League game.
"We are playing for three points, but they are certainly worth their weight in gold."
Questions were also raised after the coach called upon a second-string side for the continental game, coming as it did just days after defeat in the Serie A. Nevertheless, Petkovic was happy with the manner of the win in Greece and hailed his squad's strength in depth.
"It was important for the team tonight [Thursday] and for the so-called second choice players. Tonight we proved that we have great strength in depth," he continued.
"After the 4-0 defeat to Catania on Sunday, it was important to see a reaction and now we need another reaction on Sunday.
"We must always remain positive. We were solid for 90 minutes and when you play with this spirit then many players can show their best.
"It wasn't a high tempo, but Radu looked solid and he is certainly an option for the derby.
"We have to play like Lazio and not think about how Roma are set out."
Lazio won both of the two Derby della Capitale that took place last season although they did endure five straight defeats to Roma prior to that as well.
