Milan were in danger of going a fourth game without a win in the Serie A as Genoa were defending stoically and seemed intent on forcing the game into a goalless draw. Luckily for Allegri, Stephan El Shaarawy scored on his birthday late in the game in order to banish the memories from their mid-week loss to Malaga in the Champions League.
The Milan squad has been oft criticised for a perceived lack of enthusiasm as the new-look squad has stuttered in all competitions. However, Allegri strongly believes that his players have done all that could be asked of them and have been a bit unfortunate to be on the losing end for four games in the Serie A so far.
"I have always been relaxed as the team have put in strong performances," he told reporters after the match.
"Criticism has been too harsh, considering what we have seen on the field.
"The situation at Milan is simply an issue of results, not performances.
"We could have scored in the first half, while there were a number of controversial penalty decisions.
"Overall, I am happy with the win. We secured this result in the difficult atmosphere surrounding us at the moment, and I am happy with the way the team has reacted."
Alexandre Pato also made an appearance in the game following months on the sidelines due to an injury.
However, he could not play for the entirety of the game as Allegri explained, "I substituted Pato because he was tired. He has barely played in the last few months, so it's impossible for him to discover full fitness straightaway.
"In general, he put in a good performance, and looked dangerous for us."
Milan next visit Palermo at the Stadio Renzo Barbera on Wednesday.
