A run of two wins, four losses and a draw has left AC Milan languishing in 11th place in the league table, a far-cry from their usual position at the higher echelons of Serie A.
The Rossoneri's disappointing performance has led to calls for Allegri to be replaced, and former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola has been linked to the Italian's position. However, Baresi believed it would be unwise for the club to show Allegri the exit at this point in the campaign.
"Allegri guided Milan to the Scudetto in 2011 and the team came in second last season. Fans should not be impatient," he said to Sky Sport Italia.
"He needs time to put together a new team again. He has to gain confidence in his players and the youngsters are still developing. He deserves more time so he can get the best out of the team."
Citing the departures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva as one of the reasons behind Milan's recent struggles, the former sweeper was confident that the club would achieve results in due time.
"A lot of players left the club at the same time, and that's inevitably caused some problems. Patience is needed," Baresi explained.
"I'm confident that Milan will return to the highest level. Milan will always remain a big team, that's always competitive."
AC Milan travel to Lazio for their Serie A fixture this weekend.
