Del Piero and Totti captained their respective sides from early 2000 and share an excellent relationship off the pitch, even appearing together in a comedy sketch show created by Totti, 'La sai l'ultima di Totti', where they poked fun of each other.
It also showed in their appearances for the Italy national team as well, when Del Piero vacating his number 10 Azzurri jersey for Totti and taking up number 7 himself.
Ahead of the clash between rivals Juventus and Roma, Totti admitted that the idea of facing a Juventus side without Del Piero, who joined Sydney FC in the summer, is a strange one.
"Without doubt Del Piero will be missed by Italian football. The important thing is I'm still here," joked Totti after his side's 1-1 draw with Sampdoria on Wednesday night.
"It is going to be a little strange to play Juventus without Del Piero. I would've liked to face him again so we could retire together."
Roma coach Zdenak Zeman is known for his dislike of Juventus and will add flavour to the tie, which Totti believes is the club's second biggest match of the season, after the Lazio derby fixture.
"Of course there is rivalry with the Bianconeri and that's only normal. After all, this is not a game like any other. I'd put it as the second most important fixture, right behind the derby," he told the Roma channel.
Totti turned 36 on Thursday and celebrated in style, scoring his 216th league goal and putting him third in the Serie A all-time goalscorer list.
