The Rossoneri were involved in two of the biggest transfer moves during the summer, when they lost top scorer Ibrahimovic and star defender Thiago Silva to the riches of Paris Saint-Germain.
Many believed that the Swede moved after being tempted by PSG's proposed wage deal, but Gallaini came clean to France Football and admitted that the Rossoneri board decided to cash in on the striker.
"Ibrahimovic really wanted to stay at Milan," he stated.
"I promised him that he would not be sold when he came to meet me accompanied by Mino Raiola at the end of last season. However, the board then had a number of meetings and we opted to sell him after all."
The Italian also revealed that going back on his word had cost him his relationship with Ibrahimovic.
"He doesn't speak to me anymore since he has left Milan for Paris," Gallaini shared.
"I can't blame him, though, as I broke my promise."
After a disappointing goalless draw with Anderlecht in their Champions League opening fixture, AC Milan return to domestic action against Udinese this Sunday.
