Kaka was handed the number after joining the Serie A giants as a 21-year-old in 2003 and went on to star for the side, scoring an impressive 95 goals in 270 appearances and winning the 2007 Ballon d'Or award in the process.
However, since his sensational departure to Real Madrid for a then-world record transfer fee of €65 million in 2009, both Marco Boriello and Antonio Nocerino have failed to live up to lofty standards set by the Brazil international in the now-famous number, which has since been handed to Bojan, who recently joined the club on loan from Roma.
The 22-year-old has previously donned the famous number nine jersey at Barcelona and he insisted that he was ready for the challenge of wearing Kaka's famous number 22 Milan jersey.
"I know [about Kaka's jersey], but it is not the first time I have worn a famous number," he said.
"At Barcelona I wore the number nine, which was previously worn by [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, Ronaldo and [Johan] Cruyff.
"Anyway I'm not one of those people who gets attached to the numbers.
"I chose the number 22 because I arrived at Milan on the day of my twenty-second birthday."
The Spaniard, who is a graduate of the famous La Masia academy at Barcelona, left the club to join Roma last season. Although he failed to break into the Barcelona first team, the striker is not downcast about the turn of events and stated that he is happy to have been given a chance to make his mark in the Serie A.
"Until a few years ago I never thought about playing for a team other than Barca, I could not even imagine being with another club.
"I arrived there when I was just nine years old, I came up through the youth ranks, I was with Barca for 12 years and I thought that I would stay there forever.
"Then I had the opportunity to move to Italy and I thank God for letting that happen.
"Rome has opened up another world, I met a completely different reality, from a football and more personal perspective, and this can only be a very good thing for my career."
Bojan could next feature for the Rossoneri on September 15 when they host Atalanta in the Serie A.
