The influential Del Piero has been synonymous with the Juventus' number 10 jersey for the bulk of his career. The Turin giant was reportedly keen on retiring the number in the striker's honour upon his departure from the club, but Del Piero rejected the tribute as he wished for the number to remain in usage.
The two candidates in the consideration to inherit the coveted shirt are Marchisio and Giovinco.
Marchisio is believed to be the front-runner, given his Turin roots. With the exception of a season-long loan at Empoli in 2007, the central midfielder has played in Bianconeri colours since he was seven years of age.
However, several at the club are also supportive of Giovinco being conferred the number 10 shirt, as they consider him the club's most exciting prospect. Although Giovinco has just returned to Juventus after two seasons on-loan at Parma, he has long been heralded as Del Piero's successor given their similarities in playing style.
With Italian media reporting possible talks between the club and Arsenal's Robin van Persie, the Bianconeri board will likely take their time on making this decision, especially since the Dutchman has a well-known preference for the number.
