Milan have indicated that all of their contract dealings will be done after the season is over, which means that van Bommel will have to wait to find out whether he has to find a new club next season.
Van Bommel's agent Raiola indicated that the player has plans set in place to join his former side PSV Eindhoven should he be released by Milan but will definitely prefer to stay with the reigning Serie A champions.
"If Milan offer him a new deal, and that seems to be the case, Mark could stay in Italy," Raiola told Eindhovens Dagblad.
"But if an agreement is not reached, Mark will announce his intention to return to Netherlands, where PSV will be his first choice, regardless of whether they compete in the Champions League."
Van Bommel has won domestic titles with each of the top-flight sides he played with - the Eredivise with PSV, La Liga with Barcelona, the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich and the Serie A with AC Milan.
