Impressive Maggio joins Napoli

Napoli have confirmed the signing of promising midfielder, Christian Maggio from Sampdoria for US$17 million.

Napoli have won the race to sign promising midfielder Christian Maggio from Sampdoria after completing a deal worth around US$17 million euros on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the Naples-based club after inspiring Samp to UEFA Cup qualification last season.

English side Aston Villa were also reportedly chasing Maggio, who, despite being a defensively-minded player, scored nine goals last term. His performances saw him come close to breaking into the Italy set-up.

"I am delighted to be able to play for an ambitious and prestigious club like Napoli," Maggio told Napoli's official website. "I cannot wait for the season to start."

Sampdoria general manager Beppe Marotta admitted on Monday selling players such as Maggio was unavoidable.

"Unfortunately we are not Real Madrid who can afford to buy a champion each year. If anything, we have to sell one," he said.

The transfer fee for Maggio, who joined Sampdoria from Fiorentina in 2006, will help the Genoa-based club fund the five-year contract they recently handed to Antonio Cassano.
