S.League Player To Watch: Week 12

This week, ESPNSTAR.com picks returning Courts Young Lions forward Fazli Ayob as our Great Eastern-YEO's S.League Player to Watch.

Young Lions vs Gombak United: Fazli Ayob

The Young Lions made it two wins in a row last Thursday when they recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Gombak United at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Sherif El-Masri scored the only goal of the game in the 13th minute when he made his way into the box and nodded home from close range, but credit has to go to Fazli for the way he broke down the right and floated in a perfect cross for his team-mate.

The 22-year-old had only just completed his return to Young Lions from Malaysia Super League outfit LIONSXII, but impressed with the sheer pace and penetration he brought to the attack.

Young Lions coach Robin Chitrakar has had problems in a few areas of the park this season, but his forward line is slowly shaping up to be one of the league's most lethal.

On the wings, he has the slippery duo of El-Masri and Benjamin Kristofferson Lee, while Fazli and Jonathan Toto bring speed and power to the side respectively.

Add to that the crafty Shahfiq Ghani, who operates best in the hole, and the capable Haniff Sadique and it's hard to see the Young Lions not doing well if they can get a bit of momentum going.

This Thursday, they travel to the Clementi Stadium to take on defending champions Tampines Rovers, who have now gone three games without a win in all competitions.

On paper, the Stags remain favourites to emerge victorious but if Chitrakar decides to be adventurous and deploys a good mix of his attacking weapons, there is no reason why his side cannot cause one of the bigger upsets of the season.
