In an evenly-contested game at the Toa Payoh Stadium, both sides struggled to create any clear-cut openings in the opening 45, which was perhaps understandable given what was at stake.
However, an inspired move by Home coach Lee Lim-saeng saw him replace Hafiz Rahim with right-back Ismail Yunos, allowing utility man Masrezwan Masturi to push forward in a more-attacking role.
And it was the two who combined for what ultimately proved to be the winner; Ismail dashing forward and hitting the byline before plying in a cross that found Masrezwan, who met it with a stunning volley that had opposition goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam beaten all ends up.
Both sides will meet again on Monday evening at the Bishan Stadium for the second leg of their last-four clash.
