With just two more weeks to go before the S.League's "Half Round", the Young Lions entered the game at the Queenstown Stadium desperate to claim their first win of the campaign.
However, while they faced a tough test against an in-form Tanjong Pagar side looking to climb to second on the table above Albirex Niigata (S), they showed plenty of initiative and had an excellent chance to take the lead a minute before the half-hour mark when they were awarded a penalty, only for Sherif El-Masri to fail to convert from the spot.
But 11 minutes from time, Aide Iskandar's young charges got their goal when a goal-mouth scramble saw Anthony Aymard turn the ball into the back of his own net, which ultimately proved enough for the three points.
Over at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, defending champions Tampines Rovers stretched their lead at the top of the table to 11 points after claiming a crushing 6-2 victory over DPMM FC.
Following a goalless first half, veteran striker Aleksandar Duric opened the scoring for the Stags in the 52nd minute, before Khairul Amri added a second two minutes later.
Adi Said pulled one back for the hosts two minutes before the hour mark but Duric restored Tampines' two-goal lead in the 69th minute, before he completed his hat-trick 11 minutes later.
DPMM refused to give in however and made it 4-2 when Tales dos Santos netted in the 82nd minute but the evening belonged to the Stags and they struck a fifth two minutes later when Diogo Caramelo opened his account for the club, before Shahdan Sulaiman rounded off the scoring four minutes from time.
