Varane, 19, has managed to displace Pepe from the first-team squad and has played in the starting line-up against sides such as Manchester City, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
The Frenchman has made 25 appearances and appears to be highly favoured by the coaching staff and looks set to have a bright future.
Hierro went on to make 439 appearances for Los Blancos during a 14-year spell and similarly burst onto the scene as a talented 21-year-old in the 1989/90 season.
Lebouef sees a great many similarities between the two players but pointed out, "Many compare him to Hierro due to his technique, but on the physical level he is stronger and he is much faster."
"He is very comprehensive and if he keeps his head on his shoulders, he has a very bright future. As a defender, he will not be at his top level all of the time."
Leboeuf, who counts Chelsea as one of his clubs during his playing days, went on to hail the young defender's mental qualities.
"When arriving in Madrid, he was one of the few kids who did not talk money before talking about football.
"He has the head of an adult. He wants to work and grow. He interests me enormously."
The French defender was signed by Real in 2011 from Ligue 1 side Lens.
