Varane was the name on the lips of Real fans after he put in a commanding shift at the back for his side against Barcelona in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey in midweek; the 19-year-old capped off his wonderful performance by scoring the vital equalising goal for Los Blancos as they battled to a 1-1 draw with the Blaugrana.
The former Lens player's magnificent display for Real immediately led fans to compare him with club legend Hierro, who was one of the most successful centre-backs in Los Blancos' history.
However, Hierro believes that such comparisons at this stage of Varane's career are premature, although he claimed that the Frenchman had the potential to be one of the best defenders in the world.
"It's not time for that or for any other comparisons," Hierro was quoted as saying by Marca.
"Varane is very good, he's magnificent and he's got it all.
"He's a player with good ball control, good positioning and he's very fast. He's also strong in the air in both boxes.
"But he must be left to grow, so he can be taken care of, creating the ideal environment for him to develop and show what he's got.
"Flaws? It would be strange if he didn't have anything that needed correcting at the age of 19. Varane is equally good now as he was before having played against Barcelona."
Varane will likely feature for Real when they take on Granada in their next La Liga fixture.
