Dortmund, who won the Bundesliga in the past two campaigns, are currently third on the table and are already 12 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

However, Reus, who moved to the Signal Iduna Park last summer, has been one of the few bright sparks for Jurgen Klopp's side in an otherwise disappointing season and is their joint-second top scorer in the league with six goals.

Still, the Germany international believes he can deliver for his side on a more regular basis and is looking to have the same impact that Messi makes for Barcelona.

"Messi is a good example," he told Kicker. "He has great games and scores in La Liga on a regular basis.

"We have to do the same, however, we weren't able to do that every week. We aren't machines and therefore we do make mistakes.

"We do know that we didn't have the best first half of the season. But complaining and pondering would not be appropriate in this situation."

Nonetheless, the 23-year-old believes his side can take heart from the progress they've been in the UEFA Champions League this term, and backs them to see off Shakhtar Donetsk in their last-16 clash despite tricky conditions in Ukraine.

"It goes down to minus-20 degrees occasionally there, doesn't it?" he added. "Of course they're a difficult opponent.

"On the other hand, they probably wished for any team but Dortmund for their next fixture.

"We have earned a lot of respect [in Europe]."

Dortmund get back to action on Saturday with an away game against Werder Bremen in the league.
