The former Valencia man got his name on the score-sheet twice as Barcelona saw off lower league side Deportivo Alaves easily in their Copa del Rey fixture.
Speaking to the club's official website after the game, Vilanova expressed his satisfaction toward Villa's performance and believes the forward will soon be back to his best.
"Villa scored two goals and he was able to play the entire 90 minutes. He’s doing better each day. We’re all very pleased with him," he shared.
"His injury was very complicated and he worked hard throughout the summer. He’s a player that can score and it’s important to us that he’s part of the team."
The Catalans advanced to the next round of their domestic cup tournament on a 6-1 aggregate, but the Barcelona boss insisted the score was not an accurate reflection of Alaves' quality.
"At first they surprised us by how they played. We had to make a few adjustments in the first half," Vilanova said.
"Alavés’ tactical change forced me to use Thiago in a position he’s not used to, but he played at a very high level."
21-year old Carles Planas made his senior team debut in the game, and the left-back's performance convinced Vilanova that he had a bright future at the club.
"He’s having a great season with Barça B. He’s a quality player and he can play for the first team without any problems," he stated.
"With Adriano and Alba on the team it won’t be easy, but he did a good job this Wednesday."
Featuring in less than half of Barcelona's La Liga fixtures so far, summer signing Alex Song was given a run-out against Alaves. Vilanova revealed his plans to turn the former Arsenal midfielder into a more versatile player.
"He’s played very good games for us. He’s a player that understands our tactical system," he said.
"We’ve tried to teach him to play in two different positions and maybe that’s confused things a bit. We’ll try to make him focus on the holding midfielder position but he’ll also learn how to play as a fullback. He’s very able and willing."
