The Chelsea playmaker was omitted from the Spain squad in their 2014 World Cup Qualifying matches against Belarus and France in October despite being in-form at club level after manager Vicente Del Bosque explained that there was 'no space' in the talent-filled squad.
Mata was recalled for their friendly 5-1 win over Panama on Wednesday and he admitted that he is happy to be back in the fold of the national team.
"I was very upset at being left out last time, but it's great to be back with the lads again. But I'm very happy at Chelsea," he told AS.
The 24-year-old felt that the win was not as easy as the large scoreline suggested.
"It was not that easy, the game was a potential banana skin," he added, "They have been doing well recently and have chance to qualify for the World Cup.
"The conditions weren't the best either [the game was played in 30 degree heat] but we put in a good performance. We played well, we put on a spectacle and we go back to Spain in a very satisfied mood."
