Marcelo suffered a fractured metatarsal of his right foot while training with the Brazil national team and is expected to be out of the game for an estimated three months.

The 24-year-old is usually one of the first names on Los Blancos team-sheet and he is regarded as one of the most important players in the team.

And the former Fluminense player revealed that the outpouring of support from Real Madrid fans made him even more determined to overcome this injury in order to repay the fans on the pitch.

"I am so happy to get all these messages supporting me from the fans," Marcelo was quoted as saying by the official Real Madrid website.

"I had no idea so many people cared so much about me and I am really grateful to everyone.

"I want to make a full recovery so that I can bring more joy to the fans.

"I am going to do everything properly to return to play with the team."

The Brazil international also declared that he would not get too downcast at suffering the first serious injury of his fledging career.

"This is not enough to get anyone down, least of all me," Marcelo added.

"I am always a cheerful person. It's happened, I can't change it but now I have to work hard to get back to playing.

"I hope this will be the first and the last time it happens. I would not wish this on anyone."

"These things can happen during training or in a match and now what I have to do is do things properly so that I can get back on the team as soon as possible.

"If I keep my head up and don't lose heart, my team mates and my family will help to me to get through this."

Real Madrid have made a poor start to the season so far and will hope to be able to make up some ground on current La Liga leaders Barcelona when they host Celta Vigo in their next La Liga fixture.
