Los Colchoneros have only dropped points in their season opener against Levante so far and are currently in second place in La Liga.

With city rivals Real Madrid stuttering in their title defence - they have already lost twice - it appears that Atleti could become the side that carry the capital's hopes this season.

The Belgian custodian, however, accepted that his side's good run of form may not extend for much longer as they face tougher games in the coming months. They face the likes of Malaga, Valencia and Barcelona before the end of the year and could struggle to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

"It's true that we can't always play like this, but to win on the road is always difficult," he told reporters after the 1-0 win at Espanyol.

"We had some luck and were well organised. We started the season off right by getting 16 or 18 points, [but] we have go game by game and see where we end up.

"It was a tough game, in the first half we played well and scored, but in the second we were tight because they needed the points.

"We play every week, for 90 minutes, with great intensity and it is all thanks to the great preseason we had, but we'll take it game by game."

Atletico coach Diego Simeone called on his players to continue giving their best throughout the season. He was especially happy that the squad managed to grab the three points on Sunday despite the absence of star striker Radamael Falcao.

"We must continue in this direction, being competitive every game in all competetions," he said.

"We came out very well in the first half, and after the break it was a whole different game.

"They came out with more attacking players, but we held strong on defense.

"We are on the right path and we will continue working to continue this run of results."

Atletico next face Malaga, with the Andalusian side just two points behind them having looked equally impressive in the early stages of the season.
