The eastern side visited Mallorca hoping to end the week on a positive note following a mid-week loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
An early goal by Victor, however, unsettled the players and an inspired display by Mallorca goalkeeper Dudu Aouate made it even more difficult for the visitors at the Iberostar Stadium. And Javier Arizmendi scored a second goal after the break to condemn the Valencians to their second defeat of the season.
Pellegrino, a first-time manager, now finds his side languishing in 14th position after five games and stated that he was left flabbergasted as to why his side failed to secure a win despite having the lion's share of the possession in the game.
"Our defensive errors have been expensive and, frankly, I [fail to] find even five minutes where Mallorca has dominated, but you have to forget what happened and work and think about the next opponents," he told Marca
"The reality is that we have lost three games in six days. Everything can be improved, but again, we have tried everything.
"We were better than Mallorca in passing, shots on goal and tackles. What have we missed? The last pass to make the goal.
"My players have left their skin on the field and playing this well, [we are] going to win many games."
Having already played Real Madrid and Barcelona, the club has the chance to go on a good run in the league in coming months. The next stern test will likely be a local derby against Levante on October 7 but they have to play Real Zaragoza first on Saturday.
