Despite playing in a defensive midfield role for most of his career, Mascherano has increasingly featured in the centre of defence for Barcelona. The Argentinean deputized in the position during the club's recent Super Copa loss to Real Madrid, as captain Carles Puyol was ruled out with a cheek fracture, but was held responsible for one of Los Blancos' goals.
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Mascherano explained that defenders were never going to have it easy playing a team like Barcelona.
"I run a lot more risk playing centrally for Barca than [I would] in any other team due to how we play," he stated.
"We are constantly attacking and yes, we [might] have 70 per cent of possession, but three or four times [the opponent] will attack you. You find yourself [under pressure] with 50 or 60 meters behind you."
However, the former Liverpool player insisted he would not back down from the challenge of playing in defence.
"Every mistake, like mine against Real Madrid [in the Spanish Supercopa], is a goal," Mascherano said.
"Playing in the centre at Barcelona is a risk, but I also particularly like to run that risk."
Barcelona travel to Getafe for their La Liga fixture this Saturday.
