Calderon: Raul was not treated well

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes that the club did not pay enough respect to Raul leading to his abrupt departure to the German league.

The Schalke coach congratulates the veteran.

The former Real striker netted 228 goals in 16 seasons and was a fan favourite but he chose not to see out his career at the club two years ago.

He since went and joined Schalke and helped the German club reach the Europa League quarter-finals this season. He has also decided to leave Schalke recently but the departure was said to be on good terms and the striker gave emotional conference revealing his sadness at the decision.

Calderon lashed out at the club hierarchy for not treating the club legend with respect and for using him as a pawn in their political battles within the club. He believes that this contributed to the former Spanish international's decision to leave for Schalke and Calderon believes that they should not have allowed the striker to leave the club.

"Raul is Spanish and was described as emotionally cold, but had to be at a German club to demonstrate his warmth and affection," Calderon wrote on his official website.

"[Some at the club] claimed he had the sensitivity of a cockroach without realising that Real Madrid would never really forget a legendary player who gave his life to the club since the age of 17, before scoring 323 goals to become the top scorer and highest appearance holder with 741 in the history of Real Madrid.

"His farewell was held in the purest sense of the word, at noon, but it resulted in a false and feigned embrace of the president [Florentino Perez] which could be seen as a small but sharp knife stabbing in the back of the player."

There were claims that new coach Jose Mourinho was not happy with having a player with such an immense influence over the dressing room and helped facilitate the departure. But Calderon was dismissive of the statement insisting that the 34-year-old was nudged to consider a departure by those at the top.

"Few know that the coach [Jose Mourinho] wanted to keep the player for another season. The Santiago Bernabeu was a silent witness of a few words of the president to his representative which effectively settled the issue and aborted the wishes of both [Raul and Mourinho]."

Raul declared in April that he made the decision to leave Schalke as he is interested in seeking a new challenge outside of Europe.
