S. Gijon 0-0 Racing Santander

Sporting Gijon picked up their first point of the La Liga season with a goalless draw against Racing Santander.

Football - Sporting Gijon: David Barral

However, they were left to rue a host of missed opportunities in a match they dominated.

Racing barely mustered a shot until deep into the second half, while David Barral hit the post for Sporting, who lacked the cutting edge to finish off a game of low quality.

It was Barral who tested Antonio Tono's handling in the 18th minute when his header from Ayoze's free-kick was held by the goalkeeper.

Nacho Novo fired wide and Miguel De Las Cuevas sent an overly ambitious 35-yard free-kick over the bar, while Ayoze was also off target from close range.

Racing finally threatened moments before the break when Ariel Nahuelpan sent a long-range strike over the bar.

After the break Sporting were even more dominant, De Las Cuevas kicking things off with a 20-yard effort over the bar.

De Las Cuevas did well down the right in the 56th minute and turned the ball low into the penalty area for Oscar Trejo, whose shot was blocked by a defender and the ball squirted behind for a corner.

Moments later Andre Castro's shot deflected, causing Tono more than a moment of discomfort before eventually going behind.

Barral fired wide for Sporting, then went agonisingly close from 18 yards with a low angled strike that hit the near post.

De Las Cuevas pulled his shot side of the left-hand post, then Trejo screwed wide of the right as Sporting continued to press.

Having been a spectator for most of the match, Juan Pablo then produced a fantastic save to keep his side on level terms nine minutes from time, diving low to his left to keep out Manuel Arana's deflected shot, which was sneaking inside his near post.

Gaston Sangoy sent a free-kick over the bar after Christian had fouled Trejo, before Racing produced a couple of late efforts of their own.

Papakouli Diop's shot was straight at Juan Pablo, who then turned Pedro Munitis' shot behind at the near post, but a Racing winner would have been hard on Sporting.
