Alongside fellow Manchester United youngsters Michael Keane and Adnan Januzaj, Lingard has featured heavily in the club's pre-season tour of Asia last month.
The Englishman notched four goals, enough for Schmeichel to sit up and take notice, as the former goalkeeper pointed out to the club's official website that it was a feat manager David Moyes would surely keep in mind.
"David Moyes will be pleased in the way that some players have grasped their opportunity, I’m thinking about Jesse Lingard who is coming home from the tour as top goalscorer," Schmeichel pointed out.
"He had a very brief stay at Leicester and it didn’t really come off for him but he played for the Reserves again and was the best player in the Reserves squad. Maybe - just maybe - this is his opportunity and this is his year. It’s very interesting and, again, something for David to make a decision about."
With the upcoming friendly against Swedish team AIK Fotboll being the team's final warm-up match before the Community Shield, Schmeichel believed Moyes would utilize the game to finalize his starting 11 for the new season.
"I feel this game against AIK is the last opportunity where he can really have a feel about the team and try out one or two combinations so it’s a big game for David and a big game for the players," he said.
