Jones was in superb form for United in the centre of defence as the Red Devils secured their 20th league title with a comfortable 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Monday.

The English international, who has operated at right-back and in midfield, joined United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011 for a reported fee of £16.5m.

Ferguson, who has managed numerous United legends including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane, believes Jones has the ability to surpass all these players and has tipped the 21-year-old to lead the club to glory in the future.

"Jones, arguably the way he is looking, could be our best ever player," Ferguson said.

"I think Jones may be one of the best players we have ever had, not matter where we play him.

"At 21 years of age, he is going to be a phenomenal player. I think he can play anywhere on the pitch.

"He has such a massive influence, with his instinct and reading of the game. He has a drive about him."

Ferguson also revealed he was encouraged by the next generation of players to play for United, reserving special praise for full-back Rafael and goalkeeper David De Gea.

"Rafa [Rafael da Silva] is incredible," Ferguson added.

"That impetuosity has left him playing with greater maturity now, as the season has progressed. David de Gea has developed fantastically well.

"I think we have a nucleus of players who are young enough we expect them to improve. It's not asking too much of players to improve."

United have amassed an incredible 84 points from 34 league games and will take on Arsenal in their next Premier League fixture.
