Clarke optimistic of Ridgewell return

West Brom boss Steve Clarke is optimistic defender Liam Ridgewell will be fit for Saturday's Barclays Premier League home clash with Newcastle.

A brief appearance for Ridgewell...

Ridgewell is expected to be available for selection despite having sustained a groin problem, while striker Peter Odemwingie is a doubt due to a knee complaint which kept him out of the 2-1 league loss to Arsenal at The Hawthorns on April 6.

"Liam Ridgewell picked up a little bit of a knock in training," Clarke said on the club's website.

"He felt a tightness in his groin the other day so we took him out but we're still hopeful for the weekend.

"Peter is progressing. He's got a problem behind his knee."

Steven Reid is fit again after a groin injury but did not feature in the matchday squad for the Gunners contest because Clarke did not want three defenders among his substitutes.

Meanwhile, the Albion head coach has emphasised that the future of Baggies players who are out of contract at the end of the season will not be determined by what happens over the remaining six fixtures of the campaign.

"Nobody's future will be decided on the final six games," Clarke said. "Futures will be decided on what players have done for the club previously and how we see the club going forward."
