Although he was recently linked to Barcelona as a replacement for the departing Victor Valdes, Reina has had an inconsistent season for Liverpool.
The latest goalkeeping mishap from the Spaniard came against Premier League champions Manchester City, during which Reina got off his line and failed to take the ball from Sergio Aguero, leaving behind an empty goal-mouth for the Argentinean to score.
Nicol told talkSPORT that he was frustrated by how often the 30-year old's mistakes cost Brendan Rodgers' team.
"They been ahead on numerous occasions and then conceded goals that have been mistakes from individuals. Particularly from the likes of [Pepe] Reina in goal – I just think we’ve seen the best of him," Nicol declared.
"He’s making too many errors now that always seem to end up with the ball in the back of the net."
Nonetheless, the former defender conceded that Rodgers had little option but to play Reina, as second-choice goalkeeper Brad Jones failed to inspire confidence in his recent domestic cup run-out.
"I guess the worrying thing is that Brad Jones, whenever he’s played, hasn’t given anybody any confidence, just look at the Oldham game," Nicol stated.
"It’s not like anyone is pushing Pepe but, at the same time, every time he makes a mistake it seems to cost them."
