City managed to keep pace with league leaders Manchester United, 1-0 victors against West Ham, with goals from Mario Balotelli and James Milner enough to secure the Citizens all three points against a dogged Wigan side.
The Premier League champions looked second best for majority of the first-half and it was not until Milner came on in the 59th minute for the ineffectual Javi Garcia that City started to look threatening; the England international was eventually withdrawn in the 81st minute owing to an injury but he had already made a vital contribution by doubling his side's advantage with a fantastic long-range strike nine minutes earlier.
And the 26-year-old received due praise from Mancini for his match-winning display for the team.
"After the first 45 minutes I knew we had another 45 minutes and I had players on the bench who I knew could change the game," Roberto Mancini was quoted as saying by the official City website.
"James was in good form, he was important for us tonight [Wednesday] and against Chelsea he played very well - he's very unlucky [to be injured]."
Mancini also acknowledged how hard Wigan had made his men work and claimed his side were 'lucky' to get the win.
"They played with three defenders and two in the channels and I wanted to put players in the same position as them.
"When we changed I think we were lucky because we got the first goal and after the first goal, the match changed."
City will face high-flying Everton in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday.
