Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge are the only recognized forwards in the Blues senior team, a strike-force that has inspired very little confidence in their campaign so far. Although some sections of the Chelsea support are hoping for interim manager Rafa Benitez to bring out the best in Torres, the former Valencia boss admitted it would be an uphill task.

The Blues have been linked to a bevy of strikers in the January transfer window, with owner Roman Abramovich believed to be particularly keen on Atletico Madrid's Falcao. However, with the Colombian reportedly also on the shopping list of rivals Manchester City and Real Madrid, Chelsea club officials consider Gomez an easier target to obtain.

The German recently made his return to Bundesliga action, since being ruled out earlier in the season with an ankle injury, coming on as a substitute to score Bayern's fifth goal in the team's 5-0 rout of Hannover. Nevertheless, Gomez is expected to remain behind on-form striking duo Mario Mandzukic and Claudio Pizarro in manager Jupp Heynckes' book.

With Bayern under no pressure to sell the former German Footballer of the Year, sources in London report that Blues officials are currently debating the merits of putting together a 40 million pound deal to tempt the Bavarian side.
