Sissoko, 23, has just a year left on his contract and will be available for a free transfer next summer. It is believed that Newcastle might be interested in signing him in the January transfer window in order to cover for the absence of Cheick Tiote who will be on international duty with Ivory Coast in the African Nations Cup.
According to the Sun, he was also being scouted by the likes of Liverpool, Everton, Fulham and Tottenham but he ultimately chose to join the Magpies where fellow Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa has already made a name for himself.
The Toulouse midfielder is a combative player by nature and would be well-suited to the Premier League and has made five appearances for the France national squad.
Manager Alan Pardew will not have to worry about securing replacements for striking duo Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse after Senegal were disqualified from the 2013 African Nations Cup following crowd trouble in their second round qualifier against Ivory Coast in Dakar.
Sissoko has made 168 appearances for Les Pitchouns and has scored 19 goals so far.
