Lloris was one of Spurs' new signings in the summer transfer window but the French international has already had a turbulent start to his life at White Hart Lane despite having yet to play a single minute for his new club.
The former Lyon player is currently embroiled in the middle of a battle with Friedel for a spot in the starting lineup, with Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas and France national manager Didier Deschamps both weighing in with their own opinions of the matter.
Now, Assou-Ekotto is the latest to add his two cents worth to the issue, with the Cameroon international insisting that Lloris would have to earn his way to the starting line-up and not rely merely on his reputation.
Speaking to French radio station RMC, the 28-year-old defender said: 'It won't be easy for him [Lloris] because there is competition.
"Number 1 keeper in the French team or not, he will have to fight to get the position in the team.
Assou-Ekotto also backed Friedel to hold down his place as Spurs number 1 in the near future.
"We currently have a keeper that doesn't make any mistakes, who is very well-known in Great Britain.
"To start I believe Lloris will be No 2. If our keeper doesn't make any mistakes there is no reason to change.'
Lloris, regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, has previously expressed his disappointment at not being an automatic starter for Spurs and is reportedly seeking to sit down with manager Villas-Boas to clear the air about this issue in the near future.
