Having struggled to break into the Arsenal starting line-up since 2009, Bendtner spent last season on-loan at Sunderland, and left for his second loan spell in a row during this summer's transfer window when he moved to Serie A champions Juventus.

Despite the Dane's last appearance for the Gunners coming more than a year ago, Wenger told Sky Sports that he still holds Bendtner in high regard.

"Bendtner is a top player, he is an international striker for Denmark and he also scored two goals against Portugal [at Euro 2012]," he said.

The Frenchman then expressed his hopes that the forward's time with the Bianconeri would benefit both Bendtner and Arsenal in the future.

"I think that by playing for Juventus, he will improve and then he will come back to Arsenal," Wenger stated.

"Juventus will enhance him for us."

Arsenal welcome Southampton for their next Premier League fixture.
