The 19-year-old was one of Manchester City's deadline day signings along with Javi Garcia and Maicon, joining the club from Fiorentina for £12m with Stefan Savic in exchange.
Nastasic, who joined Fiorentina only a season earlier from Partizan Belgrade, said that he did not expect to move to a big club.
He told City's official website: 'The first I heard of it was 15 to 20 days ago [before the deadline] and of course I was surprised. I did not expect to transfer to a major club and league such as Manchester City and the Premier League after only a year at Fiorentina.
'Playing for City by definition means we'll be playing for trophies and I'm sure that City intend to strive to win each and every trophy. 'This is great motivation for me and the main reason for my arrival.'
While Nastasic has been hailed as 'the new Nemanja Vidic', the youngster chose to not talk to the Manchester United veteran about the move, fearing the consequences from the fierce rivalry between both clubs.
'We didn't talk because I am aware of the rivalry between Manchester City and Manchester United,' added Nastasic, who speaking to City's official website.
