Everton, traditionally slow out of the blocks at the beginning of the season, have defied tradition this time round and made a perfect start to their Premier League campaign with impressive wins over Manchester United and Aston Villa in their first two games.
The Toffees effective style of play and convincing displays in both games have won them many admirers, amongst whom one of them is Keown, and the 46-year-old considers the Merseyside outfit as contenders for a spot in the top four.
"With the feel-good factor back and belief they have at the moment, they might feel they can challenge for the top four," Keown said in the Daily Mail.
"You wouldn't expect it of them but confidence can do amazing things."
One of the shining stars for Everton so far have undoubtedly been the irrepressible Marouane Fellaini, who has thrived in his new role as a second striker.
"David Moyes's side have been excellent in their victories over Manchester United and Aston Villa and Marouane Fellaini has played a huge role in that," Keown added.
"He has benefited from Cahill moving to America to play for the New York Red Bulls.
"It means he can play further forward now in a role that suits him, supporting Nikica Jelavic, who continues to show what a good piece of business signing him was."
Although Fellaini has rightly drawn the plaudits for his performances so far, Keown was also quick to highlight the contributions of the Belgian's club teammates.
"The other player who is impressing me is Steven Pienaar, and Ross Barkley, who is another star in the making, has been brilliant.
"Another good addition is Kevin Mirallas, he reminded me a little bit of Eden Hazard in the way he dribbled and was so quick on his feet.
"Behind all these flair players, Everton have a solid back four, with Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin improving each year."
The Toffees are currently 3rd in the Premier League table and will be looking to keep their good start to the season going with a win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
