According to the Daily Mail, Real are confident they will succeed in their pursuit of Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric, despite an 11th-hour attempt by Chelsea to hijack the move.

Should the Croatia international indeed arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu, it would make Kaka surplus to requirements considering Los Blancos already have the likes of Xabi Alonso, Lassana Diarra, Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira and Angel di Maria in their midfield ranks.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who has already overseen the signings of Robin van Persie, Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell this summer, is said to be seriously considering making a move for the 2007 World Player of the Year, although Kaka's recent injury problems could scupper a potential bid from the Red Devils.

The 30-year-old is not the only player linked with a move to Old Trafford as the transfer window edges to a close at the end of the month, with Vitesse Arnhem left-back Alexander Buttner reportedly close to completing a £3.9million switch.
