Arsenal enjoy pre-season success

Arsenal bagged a trophy and there were wins for Aston Villa, Everton, West Ham and Reading in Saturday's pre-season action.

It was an interesting day at St Mary's as Arsenal lifted the Markus Liebherr Memorial Cup despite losing 5-4 on penalties against Southampton.

Summer signing Jay Rodriguez had given Southampton the lead but Gervinho equalised to take the match to spot-kicks.

The tournament also involved Anderlecht and each team faced each other in 45 minute matches.

The Belgian side beat Saints 1-0 in the first match of the day thanks to Tom De Sutter's strike but they couldn't make it back-to-back wins as they followed the victory up with a 1-0 defeat against the Gunners.
