The striker was recently released by United following the end of the season and is currently looking for a new club. Reports in British media indicate that he is being sought after by clubs in the Middle East and Middlesborough in the Championship as well as mid-table Premier League teams such as Stoke.
But the former Liverpool striker is strongly of the opinion that he can perform in the Premier League with the top clubs and hit back at criticism from some of his followers who branded him as being arrogant for ignoring the Championship.
"I know I can still bang them in at the top level. I proved that nearly every time I played for Man Utd. At 32, still got a few years in me," he wrote on his Twitter account.
"Not being disrespectful when saying I wouldn't play in The Championship. Always said I wouldn't drop down the leagues like some have done.
"After playing for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle, Man Utd and England I don't think I would enjoy that football."
And to further reinforce his opinion that he would not enjoy featuring in the second tier of the English football pyramid, he hinted that he would rather take time out of the game or even hang up his boots.
"If a good opportunity doesn't come my way then so be it.
"At this stage of my career it has to be something that I'm going to enjoy doing."
Earlier, he indicated on his account that he has been paying attention to all the rumours linking him with other clubs but he is only keen on either playing in the Premiership or a move abroad. Unfortunately for the former England international, there has not been much concrete interest from any club so far.
